Knighthood and Chivalry; the terms are often confused, and often needlessly distinguished. The term knighthood comes from the English word knight (from Old English cniht, boy, servant, cf. German Knecht) while chivalry comes from the French chevalerie, from chevalier or knight (Low Latin caballus for horse). In modern English, chivalry means the ideals, virtues, or characteristics of knights. The phrases "orders of chivalry" and "orders of knighthood" are essentially synonymous.

The Order of Saint Sylvester Pope and Martyr - Knight
(Ordo Sanctus Silvestri Papae)
The Papal Orders are awarded in the name of the Supreme Pontiff and are given both as awards of His Holiness as Head of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church and also as Sovereign of the Vatican City State.
The Order of Saint Sylvester is neither monastic nor military but a purely honorary title created by Gregory XVI, 31 Oct., 1841.

(Ordine Equestre Civile di San Marino)
San Marino, the world's third-smallest state, also claims to be the world's oldest republic. The Order of San Marino was instituted on 13 August 1859 to be awarded for outstanding civil or military services to the Republic of San Marino and for notable achievements in the fields of arts, sciences and politics and for notable charitable works.

The Royal Confraternity of Sao Teotonio - Grand Croix

The Royal Confraternity was founded in Portugal on 2nd November 2000. The Royal Confraternity enjoys the personal protection of His Royal Highness Dom Miguel de Braganza, The Duke of Viseu and Infante of Portugal to further the humanitarian efforts in Sao Teotonio.

Order of the Eagle of Georgia and the Seamless Tunic of Our Lord Jesus Christ  - Grand Croix

The Order of the Eagle of Georgia and the Seamless Tunic of Our Lord Jesus Christ is a family dynastic institute of the Royal House of Georgia, founded by Saint Queen Tamar (1184-1213) and was reconstituted in 1939 by the grandfather of the current Head of the Royal House, H.R.H. Irakly Bagrationi Mukran, as the main order of the Royal House.

Order of the Crown of Egypt - Grand Cordon
The Order of the Crown of Egypt is administered by
HRH Prince Osman Rifat Ibrahim the son of the late Prince Amr of Egypt and the late Princess Hibetullah Nedjla of Turkey and is a direct descendant of Mohammed Ali Pasha.  The Order supports the Royal Mohamed Ali Institute to fund its projects.

The Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called - Knight

The Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First Called was the first and the highest order of chivalry of the Russian Empire. Abolished under the USSR, it was re- established as the top Russian Order in 1998. The Order was established in 1698 by Tsar Peter the Great, in honor of Saint Andrew, the first apostle of Jesus and patron saint of Russia. It was bestowed in a single class and was only awarded for the most outstanding civilian or military merit.

Order of Prince Henry - Knight Commander

The Order of Prince Henry is a Portuguese order of knighthood created on 2 June 1960, to commemorate the quincentenary of the death of the Portuguese prince Henry the Navigator, one of the main initiators of the Age of Discovery. Minor reforms of the constitution of the Order occurred in 1962 and 1980.

The Most Illustrious Order of Naovarat - Grand Cordon
Founded by the Royal House of the Lanna in the Kingdom of Thailand. The royal patron is HH Dr. Chao Duang Duen Na Chiang Mai, Princess of Lanna, Head of the Royal House of Lanna. Dr. Chao Duang Duan na Chiang Mai is the President of the Chiang Mai Culture Council as well and she was honored for her tireless work in promoting Lanna culture.

Military Order of Saint Sebastian - Knight Commander
(Military Order of São Sebastião, said of the Frecha)
The Military Order of Saint Sebastian, also called of the Arrow, was founded by King Dom Sebastião (1554-1578), in honor of the Patron Saint of his name, to whom he was much devoted. The Order remained inactive, until, by Letter of the 20th January 2004, Dom Filipe resumed its activity to award and to distinguish those who deserved it by remarkable Distinguished Services to the Common Good and to his House, granting it new statutory dispositions.

The Society is named for the patron saint of Ethiopia and is dedicated to the preservation of the history and dignity of Solomonic institutions and the Crown of Ethiopia.  The Society is open to individuals of any nationality, sex or religion, and members are expected to support the charities of the Society through annual oblations and donations.  The Society's initial base of operation today is in the Washington, DC area of the United States, where the Ethiopian Crown Council is based in exile.

The Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem - Grand Officer
The Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem (SMOTJ) is an autonomous and independent organization, incorporated in the United States, which seeks to emulate the chivalric and charity traditions of the original Templars. The principal mission of the Order is charity.

The Imperial Ethiopian Order of Saint Mary of Zion - Knight
His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Zere Yacobe Asfa Wossen Haile Selassie established the Imperial Ethiopian Order of Saint Mary of Zion in November 2000 at the City of London. The Order has been established for the sole purpose of providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Ethiopia.

The Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem - Knight
The Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus is one of the orders of chivalry to survive the downfall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the attempts by the Crusader knights to win control of the Holy Land from the forces of Islam.  It is both a Military Order of Mercy and a Hospitaller Order dedicated to the care and assistance of the poor and the sick.

The Ecumenical Order of Malta - Knight Commander
The Order follows the principles established by the Second Vatican Council about the Ecumenical definition (Anglicans, Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants), and also the Order will effort itself in the direction of favoring the distribution of spiritual guidance with other religions. The Order constitutes one of the multiple and descendants of the Orthodox Russian Priorate of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem or “Order of Malta”.
The Nobiliary Fraternity of the Nia Naisc - Companion
The original order of the Niadh Nask was created by Terence MacCarthy, a native of Belfast who assumed sometime in the early 1980s or late 1970s the style of MacCarthy Mór. The Chief Herald of Ireland withdrew Terence MacCarthy's recognition as clan chief and courtesy title of MacCarthy Mór in July 1999.  In 2001 the order was restructured as a nobiliary fraternity under the guidance of Charles McKerrell of Hillhouse. The US branch is organized as a charitable “not for profit” corporation governed by a Council chaired by the Ceann Cumain.

International Commission and Association on Nobility  - Nobility Member
The International Commission and Association on Nobility was established in January 2008 by Don Salvatore Ferdinando Antonio Caputo to promote the ideals of chivalry, nobility, aristocracy and for the Defense of International Nobility. Membership in the Commission (TICAN) is open to all descendants of the nobility, regardless of their nationality, religion or political affiliation, as long as they support the activities of The International Commission and Association on Nobility.

Kentucky Colonels - Member
The official "Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels" was founded in 1932 by then-Governor Ruby Laffoon and has since been incorporated as a charitable organization. Kentucky's governor and lieutenant governor serve as the commander-in-chief and deputy commander-in-chief, respectively. Kentucky colonelships are commissioned for an individual's contributions to his or her community, state or nation, and for special achievements.
