The University, named after explorer Simon Fraser opened in September 1965. In less than 40 years SFU has gained an international reputation for its strengths in the liberal arts and sciences, as well as for its innovative interdisciplinary and professional programs. It has been rated as Canada's best comprehensive university five times (1993, '96, '97, '98, and '00) in the annual rankings of Maclean's magazine and has consistently placed at, or near, the top of the publication's national evaluations.
The University has three campuses: the main Burnaby campus, the Harbor Centre campus in downtown Vancouver, and Surrey campus in Surrey. SFU offers programs at the graduate and undergraduate level to approximately 25,000 students.
The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band is a grade one pipe band affiliated with Simon Fraser University at the Burnaby, BC campus. The Band was formed in 1966 during the university’s inaugural year. The band has consistently placed in the top three in world competition since the early ‘90s and has won the Grade One World Pipe Band Championships six times: 1995, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2008, and 2009. SFUPB is one of only three bands located outside of the United Kingdom that have won a World Pipe Band Championship. The band has developed a significant youth development program, through the Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Bands, its junior band system. SFU Pipe Band pipers and drummers contribute to the teaching of over 75 children and teens in a three band graduated system. In 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2005 the top level Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band won the World Juvenile Pipe Band Championship in Glasgow, Scotland. In 2006, the Robert Malcolm Memorial II Pipe Band won the Grade 2 World Pipe Band Championship.The “Piping Hot Summer Drummer” is the piping and drumming school run by the SFU Pipe Band at the Silver Star Mountain Resort in Vernon, BC every July.
