What a Wonderful Savior

The words and music for “What a Wonderful Savior” were written by Elisha Hoffman (1839-1929). After graduating from Union Seminary in Pennsylvania, Hoffman was ordained in 1868. As a minister he was appointed to the circuit in Napoleon, Ohio in 1872. He worked with the Evangelical Association's publishing arm in Cleveland for eleven years. He served in many chapels and churches in Cleveland and in Grafton in the 1880s, among them Bethel Home for Sailors and Seamen, Chestnut Ridge Union Chapel, Grace Congregational Church and Rockport Congregational Church. In his lifetime he wrote more than 2,000 gospel songs.

Lyrics by Elisha Hoffman

Christ has for sin atonement made–
What a wonderful Savior!
We are redeemed, the price is paid–
What a wonderful Savior!

Refrain:
What a wonderful Savior is Jesus, my Jesus!
What a wonderful Savior is Jesus, my Lord!

I praise Him for the cleansing blood–
What a wonderful Savior!
That reconciled my soul to God–
What a wonderful Savior!

Refrain

He cleansed my heart from all its sin–
What a wonderful Savior!
And now He reigns and rules therein–
What a wonderful Savior!

Refrain

He gives me overcoming pow'r–
What a wonderful Savior!
And triumph in each trying hour–
What a wonderful Savior!

Refrain
